Rather than being locked up in an office, 32-year-old Annie Nyaga choose to roll up her sleeves to work the land. She understood that agriculture could generate considerable income. Farmers’ daughter, she decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps, but with a modern and entrepreneurial vision.
Annie isn’t just a watermelon producer; she’s also a business owner and head of the 4-H Kenya Foundation, an organization helping young people empower themselves through agriculture. Graduated in biomedicine from the University of Egerton, she perfectly illustrates the meeting between academic knowledge and agricultural know-how.
She started her business on three acres owned by her parents, thanks to a loan of 20,000 Kenshillings (about US$200) that used her to buy her first seeds. Her choice was watermelon, a culture adapted to its region and very profitable.
👉 The numbers speak for themselves:
Yield: 3,000 to 4,000 kg of watermelons per acre
Selling price: between 15 and 35 Ksh per kilo ($0.15 to US$0.35)
Latest harvest: 30 tons sold at 28 shillings/kg
Gross turnover: 840,000 shillings in three months
Net profit: 600,000 shillings (FCFA 3 million)
With such impressive results, Annie is today seen as living proof that agriculture is a pathway to enrichment and hope.
“Agriculture pays, and it can be practiced by anyone. For those who embark on this field, never give up,” she concludes with conviction.
