International rights group Amnesty International has issued a fresh warning over what it calls a frightening escalation of threats against outspoken journalists and human rights defenders in Nigeria, declaring that the safety of Imo-based broadcaster Nonso Nkwa is now seriously at risk.

In a statement that raised the stakes, Amnesty said Nkwa has allegedly come under intimidation because of his bold investigative work and public criticism of abuses linked to the notorious Tiger Base police detention centre in Owerri.

The organisation also expressed concern over the security of Okechukwu Nwanguma, head of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), who Amnesty said has been receiving threats tied to his role in exposing alleged unlawful detentions and other serious violations at the same facility.

Amnesty warned that the threats appear to be a direct attempt to silence voices drawing attention to alleged abuses at Tiger Base, a police unit long criticised by rights groups for operating with little or no accountability.
