Grief and anger have engulfed Ekpoma, Edo State, after a soldier opened fire on peaceful protesters, killing an unarmed youth during a demonstration against rising insecurity.

Youths had taken to the streets to cry out against rampant kidnapping and banditry that has turned daily life into fe4r. Residents say criminals no longer wait for people to travel; they now invade homes, abducting victims while communities are left helpless.

Eyewitnesses say the protest was peaceful until soldiers arrived. In a moment that has shocked the nation, a soldier opened fire and one protester was hit. He later died from his injur1es. The victim was reportedly unarmed.

Residents are fur1ous, accusing Security forces of att4cking innocent citizens while failing to confront kidnappers and b4ndits. Many also blame political leaders, saying both state and federal governments are silent while focusing on the 2027 e7ections, including campaigns linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, instead of the people’s suffering.

“They run when bandits come, but they shoot us when we pr0test,” a resident cried.

As Ekpoma m0urns, calls for ju6tice grow louder. For many, this killing is a painful reminder of a country where those meant to protect the people now inspire fear — and where innocent lives are l0st for daring to speak out/copied
