The Anambra State Government has suspended the headteachers of nine public primary and secondary schools for two weeks following reports of extremely low pupil and student attendance on Monday.

The suspension was announced by the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, during an assessment tour of schools across the state. The tour was aimed at monitoring compliance with the state government’s directive abolishing Monday school closures associated with sit-at-home orders.

Dr. Nwadinobi expressed deep concern over the situation, noting that while teachers were present in the affected schools, pupils and students were largely absent. In some schools, no pupil or student was found at all, while others recorded only between two and five learners.

According to findings from the assessment, attendance figures were as follows:

Union Primary School, Ukpo (Dunukofia LGA): 3 pupils

Walter Eze Secondary School, Ukpo (Dunukofia LGA): 0 students

Aguoji Primary School, Ifitedunu (Dunukofia LGA): 5 pupils

Hilltop Primary School, Ifitedunu (Dunukofia LGA): 3 pupils

Chukwurah Primary School, Abatete (Idemili North LGA): 0 pupils

Uzubi Primary School, Eziowelle (Idemili North LGA): 2 pupils

Union Primary School, Eziowelle (Idemili North LGA): 3 pupils

Umunebo Primary School, Nteje (Oyi LGA): 0 pupils
Central School, Atani (Ogbaru LGA): 0 pupils
Speaking on the development, Dr. Nwadinobi said Governor Chukwuma Soludo approved the suspension of the affected headteachers over negligence and poor supervision.

“The headteachers are to hand over immediately to the next most senior officers to ensure smooth administration. This action underscores the state government’s zero tolerance for negligence and its commitment to discipline, accountability, and full academic engagement in public schools,” she said.

She recalled that the Anambra State Government recently issued an Executive Order officially abolishing the closure of schools on Mondays. The government also warned that any teacher or non-teaching staff who violates the directive risks salary deductions of up to 20 per cent or outright forfeiture.

The directive was contained in a letter dated January 22, 2026, and signed by the ASUBEB Secretary, Loveline Mgbemena.
