Exiled Benin Republic Opposition Leader Urgently Appeals to President Tinubu to help Stop Possible Civil War outbreak in the country
An important opposition leader from the Republic of Benin, who is now living in exile, has made a strong call to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu. He is asking for quick help to stop the political problems in Benin from turning into a full civil war.
The leader wrote a message from Europe, where he has been staying for many months to stay safe. He said the situation in Benin is very dangerous right now. The country faces a big political crisis because the government has taken strong actions against opposition groups.
In recent times, Benin’s ruling party won all seats in the National Assembly and local councils after elections in January 2026. The main opposition party, called Les Démocrates, could not get enough votes to have any seats. This means they are shut out of politics for years. They cannot even run a candidate in the presidential election coming up in April 2026.
Many opposition voices have been silenced. Some leaders have been jailed, forced to leave the country, or faced other troubles. This has made people worried that the country could break into violence if things do not change.
The exiled leader believes President Tinubu, as a powerful neighbor and leader in West Africa (through ECOWAS), can step in to help bring peace and protect democracy. He warned that without outside help, Benin might face serious fighting between groups.
This comes after Benin had a coup attempt in December 2025 against President Patrice Talon. Nigeria, under President Tinubu, quickly sent support to stop it and protect the government. Some people praised that action, while others criticized it.
Many are now watching to see if President Tinubu will answer this new appeal and what kind of help he might give. The call highlights growing fears in the region about political tensions in Benin Republic
