Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Imo State have accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of undermining electoral fairness with the alleged plan to redeploy Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Enugu State, to the state. The CSOs claim the move reeks of political favoritism, citing Dr. Chukwu’s close ties to Governor Hope Uzodinma.

In a formal petition, the coalition—including the Democratic Rights and Liberties Organisation, Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness, Imo Election Watch Coalition, and Alaigbo Democracy Accountability Network—warned that redeploying a commissioner with alleged loyalty to the governor could further erode public confidence in the electoral process.

“Imo people deserve to know that votes count and that the umpire is independent. Any administrative action that creates the perception of bias is unacceptable, especially in a state with a history of disputed mandates,” the statement read.

The CSOs referenced Dr. Chukwu’s controversial temporary deployment during the February 2022 Ngor Okpala State Constituency by-election, which triggered widespread allegations of irregularities. While no formal indictment followed, the coalition argued that the controversy remains a matter of public record.
