We, the people of Obodoawo Community, are calling on the Anambra State Government, Ihiala Local Government, and all well-meaning Nigerians to urgently come to our aid over a dangerous trench that has continued to threaten lives in our area.

Between 1999 and 2023, a road project linking Ndezike to Umudiara was awarded by the government at the time. Unfortunately, the road was never completed. During the course of the project, a deep trench was dug along the boundary area between Obodoawo, Ndezike and Okohia communities, very close to where many indigenous families live.

Since then, the trench has remained open and filled with water for long periods, especially during the rainy season. The surrounding area is often muddy and slippery, making it extremely unsafe for residents. Over the years, this trench has been linked to the loss of lives, affecting both children and adults living around these communities.

A very sad incident occurred on 16 March 2026, when a 15-year-old boy lost his life in the trench while helping his mother wash ukwa (African breadfruit) beside it. Due to the muddy condition of the ground, he slipped into the water. This heartbreaking event has brought renewed pain and concern to the community.

This situation is no longer one that should be ignored. What was meant to be a development project has become a serious danger to the people living around the affected boundary areas.

We are therefore appealing for urgent intervention to:

cover or close the trench safely;
channel the water into the nearby river;
put proper drainage and safety measures in place;
and revisit the abandoned road project for completion.

We respectfully ask the government and relevant authorities not to wait for another tragedy before action is taken. The lives and safety of our people matter.

Obodoawo Community is asking for urgent help
