Youth leader raises alarm on Police extortion in Imo State

I am using this medium to draw the attention of the Imo State Police Command, Imo citizens, and Imo stakeholders about the activities of some unknown gunmen in police uniforms operating within the Ogbaku, Irete, and Orogwe areas.

These men operate day and night, claiming to be from the Nigeria Police Force, which I doubt because the police are meant to protect lives and property, not attack citizens.

Along the Onitsha Road, there are places where refuse is dumped. After recent waste evacuation by EWAMAC, the metallic residue bins have not been returned. People are coping by keeping their waste at the same site for waste evacuation trucks to pick up.

This morning, these armed, unidentified men stormed some refuse dumps and forcefully stopped people from disposing of waste. They demanded ₦70,000 from their victims but settled for ₦20,000 from one young man after much pressure. They claimed to be from Orji Station, which is reportedly awaiting rehabilitation.

Their activities have been widely reported by Mr. Chinonso Uba. I am calling on the Imo State Governor and stakeholders (as part of effort to fight insecurity) to checkmate these gun-carrying elements who are obtaining money from citizens with guns and intimidation.

Today is National Police Day, and I have seen efforts by the IGP and police bodies to redeem the police image. If these men are policemen, their characters should represent what today stands for.

May justice prevail! The people should not live in fear of the police./Onyebo Wisdom
