No question about it, they’re going South. These sort of economic wanderers used to ply the road to the South only in dry season. But thanks to insecurity and many other problems, they’re on their way as the rainy season is stepping in.

This challenge is what we should invest in, not the mass weddings with our own public resources. These guys need to be empowered to earn and create wealth with dignity. We should be worried that they go South looking for money in lowly, dehumanising roles — shoe shiners, gatemen, nail cutters, “iron condemn”, etc. We should be worried that these young people are the immediate casualties whenever the ethnic inferno rages in the South. We should be worried that some do come back with infectious diseases to spread to their wives.
We are daily transporting live cows to the South with all the value chains linked to the business. Instead of investing in this business to process the meat here and provide jobs in the process, we send everything there.
I hate it whenever people reduce the discourse to the North vs South divide. But if we must indulge in it, why is it that southerners don’t come here in “waju”, mounted on trailers sometimes together with cows? Why should that be natural for us?
Why is it impossible to have honest and genuine discussion on how we can improve the lots of our folks? Why can’t we have a regional solution to some of these problems? Why do we think this is normal in this century? Where is our collective “kishi” of this region and its people?
It burns thinking about our collective future.
