In my view, Tinubu’s move to transmit a state police bill to the National Assembly raises serious concerns about timing, intent, and implementation.
Given Nigeria’s current security realities, I don’t think the system is stable enough for such a major restructuring without very strong safeguards.
There are already troubling reports in some states of governments striking questionable deals with armed groups, which makes the idea of decentralised policing even more sensitive.
I am also not convinced that the National Assembly, as it currently stands, is fully reflecting the depth of public concern on an issue this fundamental.
For something that could reshape the entire security architecture of the country, I believe Nigerians should have a direct say.
At minimum, there should be wide public consultation, and ideally a referendum.
Anything short of that risks making a deeply consequential reform feel imposed rather than collectively agreed.
Bottom line, I don’t trust Tinubu to fix this – he has demonstrated that he can’t fix anything that is not in his favor./Segun Onibiyo
