From the very beginning, the people informed the government and its representatives that the land had never been legally acquired. They challenged the government to provide evidence of any acquisition, but no such evidence was produced.
The earlier attempt to acquire the land during the China project was abandoned and never completed.
Because the people insisted that due process must be followed, the government directed them to return to their communities, form committees, and submit their demands and proposals. These would form part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a proper land acquisition process
The people complied. They submitted their demands, and the government reviewed them for about a month. Afterwards, the people were invited to a meeting where the proposed investor, Zion Ministry Inc., was formally introduced. During that meeting, government representatives handed over the community’s demands and proposals to Zion and instructed the ministry to engage with the people to negotiate and finalize an MOU.
That was the last official communication the people received from both the government and Zion before armed men and bulldozers invaded their ancestral farmlands.
Instead of correcting what many in the community believe was a wrongful process, the people are now being told to forget the past and approach Zion with humility, as though they should beg for what rightfully belongs to them./Dozie Nwoko
