In a significant diplomatic development, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, arrived in Bamako on Sunday for an official two-day visit aimed at strengthening engagement between the AU and Mali.

The visit comes amid ongoing tensions following Mali’s suspension from AU activities since June 2021 after the military seized power. Youssouf was received upon arrival by Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdoulaye Diop. He is expected to hold discussions with transitional authorities, including a meeting with General Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition and Head of State.

This high-level engagement signals a potential thaw in relations between the continental body and the Sahelian nation, which has been under military leadership for several years.

Should Mali even be welcoming AU into their nation?
