Please Help Restore Her Good Image
Last Monday, 13th July, this young lady boarded a commercial vehicle from Ngo Talatu Park Jos, to Kaduna, unaware that one of her fellow passengers was allegedly involved in gun running.
Along the journey, the suspect reportedly collected a parcel. At the final security checkpoint before Kaduna, a search of the passengers’ luggage led to the discovery of firearms. As part of standard security procedure, every occupant of the vehicle was taken into custody while investigations commenced.
They all maintained their innocence. Yet, before the investigation had established who was responsible, photographs of all the passengers found their way into the public domain, and some blogs hastily portrayed them as criminals.
Following a thorough investigation, security authorities identified the actual culprit and exonerated the remaining passengers, including this young lady. They were released without charge.
Unfortunately, exoneration rarely travels as fast as accusation. The damage to an innocent person’s reputation can linger long after the truth has emerged.
I think our security forces should know that while the fight against crime deserves public support, professionalism demands that the identities of suspects be established before photographs or personal details are released to the public.
The duty of law enforcement is not only to apprehend criminals but also to protect the rights and dignity of those who are innocent.
