Udogachi, Agunechemba And Ebubeagu: The Same Lesson, Two States, One Message For Ndị Igbo
Sahara Reporters has again brought to public attention what many Anambra communities have been living with for months: allegations of killings, torture and extortion by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Udogachi and Agunechemba security operatives. This is not a rumour manufactured by enemies of the state. It has followed a familiar and painful pattern since these outfits were set up, a pattern of innocent citizens shot, harassed and brutalised by men who were supposed to protect them.
A teacher gunned down in Nnewi. A female corps member stripped and assaulted. A woman shot through her own window in Okpuno-Awka. A prophet in Nnewi giving Soludo one month to disband the outfits or face litigation. Community after community crying out, and government after government explaining, defending, promising investigations that go nowhere. When the people who are meant to guard your life become the ones you must guard your life against, something has failed at the root, not at the surface.
Any Igbo person watching this closely will recognise the pattern immediately, because we have seen it before, and we are still seeing it, in Imo State, under the banner of Ebubeagu.
Ebubeagu was sold to Ndị Imo the same way Udogachi and Agunechemba were sold to Ndị Anambra: as an answer to insecurity, as a homegrown solution, as protection. But what many communities in Imo have experienced instead is harassment, extrajudicial killings, extortion at checkpoints, and a climate of fear that mirrors what is now being reported in Anambra. Different state, different governor, different acronym, same outcome: state-backed men with guns operating with little accountability, terrorising the very people they claim to defend.
This is not a coincidence. This is what happens when a people have no unified political will of their own, when each state government designs its own local solution to a problem that is bigger than any one state, and when the people at the receiving end of these bullets have no single voice strong enough to hold power accountable. Anambra people are crying out about Agunechemba. Imo people have cried out about Ebubeagu. Tomorrow it will be another state, another outfit, another name. The pain of Ndị Igbo keeps repeating itself because we keep responding to each crisis in isolation, state by state, incident by incident, without addressing the deeper wound.
That deeper wound is the absence of Biafra.
A free and sovereign Biafra with its own government answerable to our people would not need to outsource the protection of its own citizens to hastily assembled outfits with no proper training, no discipline, and no accountability. A Biafran government would exist because the people built it, and it would answer to the people who built it. This is the entire argument Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has made for over a decade, and it is being proven correct with every fresh headline of Igbo blood spilled by outfits meant to protect Igbo lives.
This is why Ndị Igbo must stop looking at the struggle for Biafra as a sentimental or emotional cause and begin to see it as what it truly is: the only lasting protection available to our people. Nigeria has failed to protect the East. Each state government’s local security experiment has failed to protect its own people from itself. What remains is the restoration of a nation that belongs to us, built by us, and defended by structures we design and control.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has paid with his freedom, his health and his family for this vision. He sits in detention today precisely because he refused to be silent about the kind of future Ndị Igbo deserve, a future where security outfits do not need to be feared by the very citizens they are sworn to protect.
Ndị Igbo must trust this struggle. Not because it is convenient, but because every alternative has been tried, and every alternative has failed, leaving behind widows, orphaned children, and communities too afraid to sleep in their own homes.
Biafra is not a slogan. It is the answer to Agunechemba. It is the answer to Ebubeagu. It is the answer to every state-manufactured outfit that has turned its guns on the people who fund it with their taxes and their trust.
