From Importation to Production: Igbo Think-Home Initiative Calls for Urgent Economic Transformation

The Igbo Think-Home Development Initiative (Igbo Economic Initiative) has taken note of concerns raised by Celestine Ebubeogu, Chief Executive Officer of Tiger Foods Ltd, about the changing competitive environment facing Igbo traders, importers and businesses.

His observation that products traditionally imported and distributed through major Igbo commercial centres are increasingly being manufactured locally by foreign investors deserves serious consideration. The Initiative views this development not as a reason for fear or confrontation, but as a powerful economic signal requiring strategic adaptation and transformation.

For decades, Ndi Igbo have demonstrated remarkable strength in commerce, distribution, entrepreneurship and interstate trade. Commercial centres such as Onitsha, Aba and Nnewi have become major economic hubs through the ingenuity, resilience and enterprise of the Igbo people.

However, the global economy is changing rapidly. Businesses that depend exclusively on importing finished products may increasingly face competition from manufacturers establishing production facilities closer to Nigerian consumers.

The appropriate response, therefore, is not to resist legitimate competition, but to move higher up the economic value chain.

If Ndi Igbo can import a product in large quantities, we must ask: Why can we not manufacture it?

If we have developed extensive distribution networks across Nigeria and beyond, why can we not establish the factories, warehouses and logistics systems that supply those markets?

This is where the philosophy of the Igbo Think-Home Development Initiative becomes particularly relevant:

Think-Home • Invest-Home • Build-Home.

The Initiative encourages Ndi Igbo to progressively transform commercial capital into productive investments in manufacturing, agro-processing, technology, logistics, industrial parks, renewable energy, warehousing, research and development, and other productive sectors.

This does not mean abandoning international trade. Rather, it means complementing importation with local production, value addition and export development.

The Initiative believes that the next generation of Igbo economic success should produce more manufacturers, industrialists, technology entrepreneurs and investors, alongside the traders and distributors for which Ndi Igbo are internationally recognised.

Five Strategic Changes

First, move from importation to manufacturing by investing in industries capable of producing goods currently imported into Nigeria.

Second, promote industrial partnerships. Entrepreneurs can combine capital, expertise and market knowledge through professionally managed investment companies, cooperatives and strategic partnerships.

Third, modernise commercial infrastructure. Traditional markets should increasingly evolve into integrated commercial ecosystems incorporating manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, technology, financial services and modern retail.

Fourth, prioritise long-term legacy over short-term profit. The true measure of business success should include employment created, industries established, skills developed and communities transformed.

Fifth, mobilise diaspora capital and expertise. Ndi Igbo living abroad possess significant professional experience, technology, international networks and investment capacity that can contribute substantially to homeland development.

The growing presence of foreign manufacturers in Nigeria should therefore encourage strategic reflection. Where foreign investors establish factories, they demonstrate that production in Nigeria is possible when capital, technology, infrastructure and market opportunities are properly aligned.

The question for Ndi Igbo should not simply be, “How do we compete?” but rather:

“What can we build, manufacture and innovate so that we can compete successfully in Nigeria, Africa and the global marketplace?”

The Initiative therefore calls upon traders, manufacturers, investors, professionals, financial institutions, governments, traditional institutions, young entrepreneurs and the global Igbo diaspora to embrace a new economic mindset.

A prosperous Alaigbo requires more than trading spaces. It requires factories, industrial parks, technology hubs, logistics centres, agro-processing facilities, research institutions, reliable energy and globally competitive enterprises.

This is the deeper meaning of Aku-Ruru-Ulo — “Let Wealth Return Home.”

Let us move from importing to producing, from trading to manufacturing, from individual success to collective prosperity, and from wealth accumulation to wealth creation and enduring legacy.

The future belongs to those who build it.

Think-Home. Invest-Home. Build-Home.
