After the # EnuguMarathon2026 today, I met Sunday Ifedi, an Enugu native who was unlawfully arrested and detained by the DSS alongside his wife, Calista, after they were accused of being IPOB operatives since 2021 under the wicked Muhammadu Buhari regime. They were subsequently shipped to the notorious Wawa Barracks detention facility in Niger State.
Tragically, Calista never made it out alive. She died in custody at Wawa Barracks and was buried in a shallow grave. Sunday spent more than four years in detention, and he says the DSS later acknowledged that Calista had been wrongly accused.
Sunday came to meet me with his daughter, Merit, who was only a teenager when her parents were snatched away. She and her siblings were suddenly left without either parent and had to abandon their education.
Amnesty International and I fought relentlessly to locate Sunday and Calista and secure their freedom, and Barrister Adeyanju Deji too has worked tirelessly on this case. The lawless DSS initially denied that they had even arrested them. We kept searching and pushing until they were eventually located. By then, however, the consequences of this terrible injustice had become irreversible.
Think about the human cost of this monumental injustice: a woman lost her life in custody; a husband lost his wife and more than four years of his freedom; and their children lost their mother, their father’s presence, and crucial years of their education.
Behind every unlawful arrest, prolonged detention and abuse of state power are real human beings and families whose lives can be permanently destroyed.
Nigeria cannot continue to be an unjust nation operated by hooligans in government who wield state power without accountability.
There must be justice for Calista, Sunday, Merit and their entire family. Those responsible for unlawful detention, abuse and death in custody must be identified and held accountable.
Justice must not only be demanded; it must be done.
