Whenever I talk about my disappointment when I went to Bayelsa, some people think I h@te them. No, I don’t. I am surprised by what I saw in Bayelsa. I was hoping to meet a great city, but it turned out to be a different story.
Bayelsa contribute much to the economy of Nigeria, but gets nothing from it. When I went to Bayelsa, I came face to face with a wooden bridge. The worst part of it was that while one car was passing, the other one had to wait until it passed. There is palpable fear that the bridge might fall.
The only city as of that time in Bayelsa was Yenagoa. And banks only existed there. It was terrible. You did map out a day for bank-related issues in Bayelsa.
But instead of talking about these things, pages owned by Ijaw people are online bashing Igbo people and claiming that Orlu, Onitsha, Ugwuta, Anam, etc are Ijaw people. This is shameful.
Oil companies are headquartered in Lagos or Abuja, and Fulani and Yoruba people are owners of oil wells, but the Ijaw man will devote his time to bashing Igbo men. Oil companies have destroyed their land and water life, yet he isn’t angry at Fulani and Yoruba. He is angry at an Igbo man.
Has Ịgbo man been at war with the Ijaw? No.
Has the Igbo man taken their lands? No.
Something is fundamentally wrong with a people who will leave their problems unattended and start chasing what is not chasing them.
Just take a look at an Ijaw community, and you will shed tears.
