Butcher/Islamic scholar killed over alleged blasphemy in Sokoto

Event involving blasphemy by Usman Buba, a butcher and a hafiz (memorizer of the Qur’an), who was brutally killed by our fellow Muslims over a fake accusation of blasphemy in Sokoto is a thing of concern and lesson for us all.

Usman was beaten and stabbed to death after a small argument at the Sokoto main abattoir.
His murder has sparked massive outrage because eyewitnesses have come forward to confirm that he never blasphemed against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

One eyewitness, Nuhu Bala, explained what actually happened: Usman was simply advising a beggar who was using the name of the Holy Prophet to beg for money.

Some people around completely misunderstood what he was saying. They immediately jumped to conclusions, labeled him a disbeliever, and falsely accused him of blasphemy. Within minutes, a mob gathered, throwing stones and stabbing him with knives.

Some onlookers tried to shield Usman and called the police, but the angry crowd overwhelmed them. Before security officers could arrive, Usman was already dead.

This is a deep tragedy and a shameful moment for us. A Muslim lied against a fellow Muslim who memorized the Qur’an, and a mob murdered him on the spot without any investigation, court trial, or due process.

As a Muslim speaking on behalf of the #NDM, we must ask ourselves serious questions: If we can falsely accuse and butcher our own brother in faith over a misunderstanding, what kind of message are we sending to the rest of the world?

This is not religion; it is lawless mob violence. We must stop letting anger and ignorance rule our streets, and we must demand that every single person who took part in another’s murder face the full weight of the law.

When a community allows rumors and mob emotion to replace evidence and justice, it sacrifices its own moral foundation.

A society where anyone can be executed on the street based on a false accusation is a society where no one is safe, not even the devout.

True devotion to faith protects truth, human dignity, and the rule of law; it does not hand over human life to the whims of an uninformed crowd.
