The Cross River State Police Command has released a photograph of a woman who was found dead inside a hotel in Calabar, appealing to members of the public who may recognise her to come forward with information that could help establish her identity.

The woman was discovered dead earlier this month in a hotel located along Clifford Lane, Calabar South.

According to the police, she had checked into the hotel with an unidentified man whose whereabouts are currently unknown.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command said the photograph was released to assist efforts to identify the deceased and trace her family members, associates or anyone who may have information about her.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that the woman lodged at the hotel alongside a male guest, whose current whereabouts remain part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are now working to locate the man and determine what happened before the woman was found dead.

The latest development follows an earlier police report issued on September 8 concerning the discovery.

At the time, police said an unidentified female guest was found unresponsive inside Room 2 of the hotel.

Investigators were told that she had checked into the facility with a male guest who was reportedly not properly documented during the admission process.

The woman was discovered after the receptionist on duty noticed that the door to the room was open.

When investigators arrived at the scene, they reportedly observed what appeared to be marks of violence on the woman’s face and neck.

Her body was subsequently taken to the General Hospital in Calabar, where she was confirmed dead before being deposited at the mortuary.

Meanwhile, the receptionist who was on duty when the incident occurred remains in police custody and is assisting investigators.

According to the Command, the receptionist is providing information about how the guests were admitted and what happened before the woman’s body was discovered.

However, police stressed that the receptionist’s detention should not be interpreted as proof that he committed any offence.

The Command said any further action against him would depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation and would be handled in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has directed investigators to conduct the case professionally and objectively.

The investigation is expected to establish the identity of the deceased, determine the circumstances surrounding her death, locate the male guest who lodged with her and establish whether anyone else connected to the incident played a role.

The police are therefore asking anyone who recognises the woman in the released photograph, knows her family or associates, or has information that could help investigators locate the male guest to contact the authorities.

Members of the public can reach the Police Control Room on 0706 797 7330 or 0905 827 3057, or provide the information at the nearest police station.

The Cross River State Police Command said further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
