TINUBU: DO NOT SABOTAGE THE OPPOSITION

Reports that TikTok has been disrupted in parts of Northern Nigeria should alarm anyone who cares about the 2027 elections.

Let me be precise about what I am saying and what I am not.

I have seen no verified evidence that President Bola Tinubu ordered any disruption, or that it was designed to obstruct Atiku Abubakar. Anyone who presents that as established fact is doing the opposition no favours. Allegations must be proved, not shouted.

But absence of proof does not mean absence of questions. And the questions belong to the government.

When a communications platform used by millions of young Nigerians goes dark in one region of the country during an election season, silence is not an option. The Nigerian Communications Commission and the telecommunications operators know precisely what happened, where it happened, and why. They should say so, publicly and in detail. If it was a technical fault, prove it. If somebody issued an instruction, name the person and cite the legal authority under which they acted. A regulator that cannot answer those questions is not regulating; it is hiding.

My warning to President Tinubu is simple: do not touch the legitimate political activity of your opponents.

If it is ever established that state power, telecommunications infrastructure, regulators or the security agencies have been used to restrict political communication or to disadvantage opposition parties, that is not a political scandal. It is a constitutional breach, and it must be answered through the courts and the National Assembly, not managed through press statements.

There is also a lesson here that every occupant of Aso Rock seems to learn too late. Each abuse of presidential power manufactures the case against the presidency itself. Every attempt to silence an opponent strengthens the argument for tighter limits on executive power, stronger institutions and closer scrutiny. Tinubu would be building the cage he will one day be judged in.

Nigeria does not belong to Bola Tinubu. It does not belong to the APC. It does not belong to Atiku, Obi, Wike or any other politician who imagines the country is a prize to be held.

Nigeria belongs to Nigerians.

Tinubu was elected President. He was not crowned emperor. The Presidency is a constitutional office with defined limits, and it cannot lawfully be turned into a machine for suppressing competition.

The era in which Nigerian leaders treated the state as personal property must end. 2027 must be won with arguments, policies and votes, not with censorship, intimidation or control of the airwaves.

Investigate the TikTok disruption. Publish the findings. And if political interference is proved, hold the responsible parties to account.
