ADC vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has explained the position of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on fuel subsidy, saying the former vice president’s stance reflects the economic difficulties Nigerians have faced since the subsidy was removed.

Speaking on AIT’s One on One programme, according to a video published on the station’s official YouTube channel on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Amaechi criticised the effects of higher petrol prices on the economy.

He argued that subsidy removal had contributed to rising living costs, with increased fuel prices affecting transportation, businesses, household expenses and the cost of essential goods.

Amaechi said Atiku’s position had been influenced by the impact of the policy on Nigerians, adding that the former vice president was now advocating what he described as a position that puts citizens’ welfare at the centre

He also criticised the Tinubu administration’s handling of the subsidy policy, alleging that the government proceeded with the removal despite professional advice against it.

Amaechi further outlined the ADC’s proposed approach, saying the party would seek to amend the Petroleum Industry Act and make crude oil available to domestic refineries below international market prices.

According to him, the proposal could reduce the cost of refined petroleum products and ease expenses associated with transportation, food production and other economic activities.
