Otuocha Is Calm This Morning — Let This Silence Become Peace

Information available to Family Writers Press International indicates that Otuocha is relatively calm this morning.

But beneath this fragile calm lies a community still carrying the weight of yesterday’s violence. Houses have been burnt, people have been displaced, lives have been lost, and families are waking up today with fear, grief and uncertainty.

Peace has not truly returned simply because the guns have fallen silent.

For peace to return, the anger must also give way. The desire for revenge must end. And both communities must find the courage to step back from the edge before another life is lost.

The presence of Nigerian Army personnels on the ground is reassuring, and information reaching us indicates that a curfew was imposed last night in the area, and it runs from 7:00pm to 6:00am.

We are also receiving reports that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has directed the soldiers to shoot at sight anyone found loitering during the curfew hours. This particular directive remains a report from our sources and should be confirmed by the appropriate authorities.

But beyond soldiers, curfews and security operations, what Otuocha desperately needs is something deeper: peace among its people.

Aguleri and Anam have lived beside one another for decades. Let yesterday’s anger not become tomorrow’s inheritance.

A boundary can be disputed. A signpost can be removed. A CCTV camera can be destroyed. A disagreement can be taken to the authorities. But a life once lost cannot be negotiated back.

Please, let the guns remain silent. Let the flames die. Let the anger subside. Let the displaced return home. Let mothers sleep without fear, and let children wake up without hearing gunshots.

Aguleri and Anam, it is enough.

Whatever divides us, our humanity must remain greater than our differences.

Let Otuocha not be remembered for the bloodshed of these days. Let it instead become a place where two wounded communities chose peace over revenge.

Please, let there be peace.
