The government of Ekiti State has terminated the employment of the surgeon responsible for a disputed kidney operation on a patient named Joshua Afolayan at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

This announcement was made on Friday through a statement from Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Health & Human Services.

On Thursday, the Commissioner’s office received a comprehensive report from a seven-member Panel of Enquiry led by Professor Francis Faduyile.

This panel was established 11 days prior to investigate Afolayan’s claims regarding the surgical procedure he underwent at EKSUTH.

After thoroughly reviewing the report and its recommendations, the Ekiti State Government decided to take the following actions: the surgeon primarily responsible for the operation will be dismissed from EKSUTH immediately.

Additionally, all members of the surgical team present during the operation will be suspended for one month while further administrative evaluations are conducted.

The Ekiti State Government will also cover the entire cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr. Joshua Afolayan and will manage his post-transplant care and related medical maintenance for two years.

In accordance with the Panel’s recommendations, a complete reorganization of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be implemented to enhance clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.

The commissioner emphasized that while the Ekiti State Government supports the dedicated health professionals at EKSUTH and recognizes their hard work and commitment, it will take firm action when professional standards are compromised.

Dr. Filani reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding patients, maintaining ethical and professional standards in healthcare, and restoring public trust in the Ekiti State health system.

He assured that necessary reforms will be pursued to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure that EKSUTH remains a center of excellence in patient care.

“We appreciate the patience and trust of the people of Ekiti State, and we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to enhancing the quality of healthcare, compassion, and responsible governance,” the commissioner stated. Earlier this month, Afolayan accused the Teaching Hospital of allegedly harvesting his kidney.

At a press conference in Ado Ekiti, Afolayan recounted that he had an accident in August 2025, and after visiting the hospital, he was informed that one of his kidneys was damaged.

He stated that multiple scans, including those at UCH in Ibadan, Oyo State, confirmed that while the right kidney was damaged, the left kidney was healthy.

However, during the surgery intended to remove the damaged kidney to protect other organs, Afolayan noted that he had urinated just five minutes before the operation, but since the procedure in October, he has been unable to urinate.

He mentioned that all attempts to obtain explanations from the hospital were unsuccessful, as they kept evading his inquiries. Afolayan further revealed that upon reconsideration, he sought another facility for scanning, only to find out that he had been living without a kidney since the surgery.
