The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Chijioke Okpalaugo, has backed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s controversial one-week closure of the market, describing it as a necessary measure to revive the market’s struggling economy, crippled by the Monday sit-at-home enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking to journalists in Onitsha on Tuesday, Okpalaugo insisted that the closure was in the best interest of traders, customers, and the wider community. He appealed to the governor to “temper justice with mercy” by reopening the market before the end of the one-week period.
The shutdown followed Soludo’s on-site inspection on Monday, after traders and market leaders ignored repeated government calls to resume normal business activities. The state government claims the Monday sit-at-home costs Anambra State about ₦8 billion weekly, and the South-East region an estimated ₦19.6 billion, while disrupting work and other economic activities.
