Former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Lai Mohammed, has raised alarm over what he described as a growing Hausa insurgency. He said the issue has not been receiving the attention it deserves despite its potential consequences for northern Nigeria.

In an interview with SPLASHFM 1055 Ibadan, Mohammed questioned whether the insurgency is being sponsored, stressing that it is different from Fulani groups and is beginning to assert itself. He warned that the movement could have serious implications for the stability of the Sokoto Caliphate.

Mohammed explained that part of the fault lines of the 1804 Jihad, consolidated by 1817, was not only the territorial conquest of Hausa land but also the subjugation of Hausa identity under the Sokoto Caliphate. He cautioned that the current insurgency could challenge that historical consolidation.

In his words,

“Hausa insurgency—people are not noticing that. In fact, I’ve been posing the question, somebody asked: ‘Is someone funding that Hausa insurgency?’ It’s been growing, that they are not Fulani. But the complaint is muted.” ……

Nobody is funding anyone as far as I know. Hausa activism is organically growing as a natural force. It had long been overdue, though Fulani banditry serves as the immediate trigger upon accumulated factors.

The struggle also continues as long as it takes, until Hausawa LEGITIMATELY collect back all that belongs to us.

What we are witnessing is just the beginning ✊.
