Imo State is making significant strides in the fight against drug abuse, leveraging technology and creativity to promote awareness and develop youth talents. The state government has partnered with Japanese tech firms to produce games and music aimed at spreading anti-drug messages and showcasing Imo youths’ talents.
This initiative is part of a broader campaign to combat drug abuse among youths in Imo State. The campaign involves awareness and interactive health talks, peer-led counseling sessions, and training to recognize and resist peer pressure. The goal is to equip youths with factual information about the risks of drugs and encourage them to become advocates for drug-free lifestyles.
The partnership with Japanese tech firms will focus on producing engaging games and music that promote anti-drug messages. Music, in particular, has been identified as a powerful tool in influencing behavior and promoting positive change. By harnessing the power of music and technology, Imo State aims to reach a wider audience and inspire youths to make informed choices.
Recently, the Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring Hon Ezechukwu N Obonna and the Commissioner for Youth Development and Talent Hunt, Dr. Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu visited Japan, where they engaged with GigBeing Inc and other Tech companies. This visit is part of efforts to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for collaboration. The CEOs of these companies will soon visit Imo State to conduct a contest among youths, seeking talented individuals with innovative ideas for game development. The selected youths will not only contribute to the production of these games but also earn revenue for the government. Moreover, they will be sponsored to Japan for mentorship and further development of their skills.
Governor Hope Uzodimma has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling drug abuse in Imo State, emphasizing the need for collective effort to achieve a drug-free society. The state government has donated vehicles to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and renovated a rehabilitation center to support the treatment and reintegration of drug users.

This initiative aligns with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s vision for youth empowerment, focusing on digital skills development and entrepreneurship. The SkillUpImo project has already trained over 50,000 youths in critical 21st-century skills, enabling them to launch startups and secure remote jobs. The government aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for digital innovation and growth, positioning Imo State as a leader in Nigeria’s emerging tech-driven economy.
This initiative is a testament to Imo State’s dedication to empowering its youths and promoting a healthier society. As the state continues to innovate and collaborate, it’s likely to make significant progress in the fight agains drug abuse
