Miss Olowofela Abidemi Oluwabukola, a 20-year-old medical student of Madonna University, is not an ordinary student. She obtained five A1 distinctions in her O’Level examinations, scored 310 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and gained admission into Madonna University where she demonstrated exceptional academic excellence by scoring her first year with a perfect 5.0 CGPA, earning a transfer into the prestigious Medicine and Surgery programme.
However, following a sudden family financial crisis occasioned by her father’s illness, her mother was unable to complete the ₦3.5 million tuition required for the programme despite making substantial payment and appealing for time to balance the outstanding fees.
The University allegedly barred the student from sitting four examination papers solely due to unpaid fees.
Faced with the situation and unable to continue under such conditions, the student formally submitted a letter of withdrawal dated 24 February 2026.
Shockingly, the family alleges that after withdrawing, Miss Olowofela was prevented from leaving the university campus, with her exit reportedly made conditional upon payment of outstanding tuition fees.
Her name was allegedly publicly displayed over the unpaid fees, she was excluded from academic activities, and left isolated and has been hiding around the university environment.
Even more alarming are reports from her mother indicating that the young student has suffered severe emotional distress arising from the humiliation and uncertainty surrounding her situation. Messages received by the family have raised urgent concerns about her psychological wellbeing and physical safety.
A formal petition has been submitted to: the Vice-Chancellor, Madonna University, Nigeria, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Federal Ministry of Education, on the disturbing situation which emerged involving Miss Olowofela Abidemi Oluwabukola, a 20-year-old medical student of Madonna University, Nigeria, raising urgent serious concerns from her family about her safety.
We have issued this urgent demand for her immediate and unconditional release, and should anything happen to Abidemi Oluwabukola, the management of Madonna University should be prepared to account.
This is how Nigeria, like a demented, has been sucking out its finest eggs.
