A businessman in Abakaliki, Mr. Okay Emmanuel Nnolum, has accused former Ebonyi State Governor and current Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, of unlawfully revoking his company’s Right of Occupancy, demolishing his filling station, and converting the land into a private shopping plaza.

The disputed property is located around the Dr. Akanu Ibiam Roundabout. Nnolum said the issue began when the state government notified him that a road dualisation project would affect about seven meters of his property frontage. However, he alleged that instead of taking only the agreed portion, the entire filling station and adjoining plots were fenced off and demolished.

According to him, although his company, B.O. Nnolum & Sons Limited, received a revocation letter covering the filling station and was paid between ₦20 million and ₦23 million as compensation, additional properties were allegedly demolished without proper revocation notices. He also claimed that some revocation letters were backdated and pasted after he protested.

Nnolum filed a lawsuit (Suit No. HAB/5/2020) to challenge the action, but he alleged that demolition continued while the case was pending in court. The matter remains unresolved.

He further questioned the public purpose of the acquisition, claiming that the proposed road expansion was never completed and that a shopping plaza now stands on the land. He alleged that the property has been leased to a company he believes is linked to the former governor, though this claim has not been independently verified
