Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Udeme Monday Stephen, the alleged mastermind behind the violent February 24 attack in Benin City, Edo State targeting Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and other opposition figures. During the incident, Obi, former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun, and senior African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftains narrowly escaped death when armed men opened fire at a political meeting.
Stephen, 26, reportedly claimed responsibility on social media, boasting that Obi was “lucky” to survive and threatening further attacks. DSS operatives tracked him through covert investigations and forensic intelligence, and he is now in custody awaiting charges. The arrest comes amid heightened political tensions and growing concerns over threats to high-profile political figures in Nigeria.
