Hundreds of residents fled their homes after terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a military base and set public facilities ablaze in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State last night,
It was gathered that the terrorists stormed the remote Geidam town at about 7:30 p.m., shooting in different directions and setting parts of the market and other structures on fire.

According to a security source who spoke to our correspondent while hiding near the scene, flames engulfed sections of the market.

The source said: “We fled our homes, and everyone is still in the bush until daybreak. As I am talking to you now, the market has been set on fire, but I cannot confirm the details because I am currently in the nearby bushes.”

Another resident also confirmed the attack, adding that the terrorists set a vigilante vehicle ablaze.

“I can confirm that the terrorists burned the operational vehicle belonging to the vigilante group, as well as other vehicles in the town,” the resident said.

One correspondent could not ascertain the extent of the damage or casualties at the time of filing this report, as residents reportedly fled the area amid the unfolding incident.

Geidam, located in the northern part of Yobe State, has previously experienced attacks linked to insurgent activities in the region.

Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
