Biafran day : Historian recalls the role of Swedish Aviator Gustav Von Rosen

In 1968–1969, as the Nigerian federal forces enjoyed air superiority with Soviet-supplied MiG-17s, Ilyushin bombers, and other advanced aircraft, the Biafrans had virtually no air power. Enter Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen, a Swedish nobleman, pioneering aviator, and humanitarian pilot with a long history of flying relief missions in conflict zones. Disgusted by the suffering of Biafran civilians—especially the widespread starvation caused by the blockade—von Rosen took bold action.
He acquired five small civilian Malmö MFI-9B trainer aircraft (nicknamed MiniCOIN for “Miniature Counter-Insurgency”). These were tiny, propeller-driven planes—light sports aircraft, not much larger than a small Cessna—with only about 100 horsepower. Von Rosen had them modified with rocket pods (68 mm SNEB rockets), painted in camouflage (reportedly using Volkswagen car paint), and flown at treetop level to evade radar and anti-aircraft fire.
The squadron, crewed by a mix of Swedish and Biafran pilots (including Biafran pilots like Willy Murray-Bruce and Augustus Opke), became known as the “Biafran Babies”—a name evoking the innocent children they fought to protect. Despite their humble origins, these “Babies” punched far above their weight.
Starting with daring raids on May 22, 1969 (attacks on Port Harcourt, Enugu, Benin, and other airfields), the Biafran Babies destroyed or damaged multiple Nigerian MiG-17 fighters, Il-28 bombers, and other assets on the ground. They conducted low-level surprise strikes, firing rockets with impressive accuracy while suffering no losses in their initial operations. Their actions provided a crucial morale boost to Biafran forces and temporarily disrupted Nigerian air operations.84ddb7
Symbol of Resilience and Sacrifice
Count von Rosen and his team embodied the spirit of the Biafran struggle: resourcefulness in the face of scarcity, determination against superior firepower, and a commitment to justice. Their story reminds us that true strength often comes not from the biggest weapons, but from the boldest hearts.
On 30th may we observe #BiafraHeroesDay with a sit-at-home, we honor:
The pilots and ground crew of the Biafran Babies
The soldiers who held the lines
The civilians who endured unimaginable hardship
All who gave their lives in defense of self-determination, dignity, and the right to exist
Their sacrifice was not in vain. The memory of Biafra lives on in the resilience of our people and our unyielding pursuit of justice.
