In a speech delivered today in the Maradi Region, while discussing the history of Gobir and Katsina, the President dismissed the narrative that Usman dan Fodio’s campaign should simply be described as a jihad. He pointed out that even Usman dan Fodio himself studied and acquired knowledge within the Gobir Kingdom. He further stated that dan Fodio had served under the Gobir Kingdom and that it was the Gobir authorities who provided him with his livelihood and support. He asked: if the rulers of Gobir were truly “pagans” (arna), how could there have been scholars there under whom even dan Fodio studied?
According to General Abdourahamane Tiani, his remarks also serve as a response to Fulani clerics who declare others unbelievers while citing dan Fodio’s legacy.
In conclusion, the General presented what he described as the true sequence of events. According to him, the conflict began as a political dispute between the Gobir Kingdom and Usman dan Fodio, which eventually led dan Fodio to declare jihad against the kingdom. In other words, he argued that politics and the struggle for power were significant factors in what is commonly referred to today as the “jihad.”
