Angela Merkel elected for 4th term as German chancellor

Angela Merkel has been elected Chancellor of Germany for the fourth time, putting an end to nearly six months of political drift in Europe’s biggest economy.

Lawmakers voted 364-315 to re-elect 63-year-old Mrs Merkel, Germany’s leader since 2005, who ran unopposed.

The vote in Germany’s parliament – Bundestag – took place on Wednesday, a full 171 days after September’s general election, nearly double the previous record.
