There was panic in Imo State on Sunday following the killing of a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party in the state, Herbert Nwaneji.
The deceased, according to information made available to our correspondent on Sunday, was until his murder, a chieftain of the PDP in Egwedu-Atta Ward in the Njaba Local Government Area of the state.
A source in the party, who declined to give his name, said the lifeless body of the deceased was found around the boundary between Atta and Nkume communities in the local government area.
According to the source, the PDP chieftain had received a telephone call on Friday and quickly left his house but never returned.
Worried by his sudden disappearance, his family went in search of him and later found his body where it was dumped by his suspected killers.
The source said, “Mr Herbert Nwaneji received a telephone call on Friday and quickly left his house on his motorcycle. His family members became worried when he could not return and could not pick his calls also.
“A search was declared and to the surprise of many, his body was found around the boundary between Atta and Nkume communities.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, who confirmed the killing to our correspondent in a telephone conversation, said that the command had swung into action immediately to solve the mystery surrounding the murder.
Ikeokwu said the motorcycle belonging to the decreased had been recovered, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, had ordered investigation into the matter.
A source at the PDP secretariat in Owerri told our correspondent that the main opposition party was deeply saddened by the killing of its chieftain.
He said the party had reached out to the security agencies to ensure that the suspects were arrested without delay.
