Internet fraudster sentenced to 16 months in prison

The Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday, sentenced one Temitope Teslim to 16 months in prison for engaging in Internet fraud.

Teslim was apprehended by the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police on May 16, 2018, in the Ogba area of Lagos and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

It was learnt that in the course of investigation, Teslim wrote three statements and confessed to engaging in online dating scam.

Teslim was re-arraigned on Wednesday on an amended two-count of possession of fraudulent documents.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Bilkisu Buhari, said the defendant had entered into a plea bargain with the EFCC.

Having listened to the terms of agreement reached by the prosecution and the defence, the presiding judge, Justice Sherifat Solebo, sentenced Teslim to one year and four months in prison.

Solebo also ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 7, a silver Acer Chrome and battery power pack to the Federal Government, noting that the items were being used “as instruments of fraud.”
