A man, whose identity has not been determined, was said to have cut off his brother’s hand when the two of them engaged in a fight on Christmas Day.
The man was said to have rushed to his house, picked up a machete with which he tried to cut his brother on the head, but the victim was said to have defended himself with his hand.
It was gathered that the victim was the first to attempt to stab his brother with a knife, but failed.
It was learnt that the incident occurred at Otatubu, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The siblings were said to have had a misunderstanding, which resulted in the fight, and were said to have turned down all entreaties by elders in the community to settle their differences.
A source, who did not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent on Thursday that the victim was rushed to a hospital where he is still receiving treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been arrested and was in police custody.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Aminu Saleh, had directed that the case be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State, Mr Aminu Saleh, has directed that the case be transferred to the state CID for diligent investigation. The suspect is in custody,” Butswat stated.
He added that 12 out of the 17 corpses were deposited in the Ashes to Ashes Mortuary of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
Earlier, the Chairman of the commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, pointed out that the panel would recommend punitive measures against anyone found culpable in the building collapse.
