The Divisional Police Officer of Itu Police Station in Akwa Ibom State, CSP Joseph Udourioh, on Tuesday, told the Judicial Panel on Police brutality in the State that his life is under threat.
CRIMECHANNELS learnt that Mr. Joseph, shot one Victor Utu, a suspected armed robber, when he was the DPO in Okobo local government area of Akwa Ibom, with his pistol while the victim was trying to escape from Police custody. He however, said that he never intended to harm him.
He said that after the incident, he took the victim to the hospital, where he claimed to have used the sum of 2.8 million naira in treating him of his gunshot wound.
“Victor, who I shot, now turned out to be the leader of an armed robbery gang involved in stealing facilities in one of the hospitals in Okobo, and raping nurses there, ” he added.
He told the panel that since the incident, his phone has never stopped ringing, as different people called in to threaten him.
He said, “Since then I have been receiving threats from cultists. My office and many of my properties have been burnt. During the cause of these threats, cultists have visited me several times partly at Okobo and partly at Itu.”
Meanwhile, counsel to the claimant, Clifford Thomas, frowned at the injury done to his client, Victor Otu.
He alleged that the DPO tried to bribe his client with N1. 3 million to end the case, but instead, his client returned the money to the DPO.
