Obiano accuses Ohanaeze of desecrating Zik

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, on Monday flayed the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for allegedly disrespecting the late pioneer President of Nigeria, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Obiano said the Ohanaeze Ndigbo must not be allowed to continue to be partisan by serving as the mouthpiece of political parties.

He said, “Ohanaeze is predominantly funded by state governments. We are going to stop it from endorsing candidates. Ohanaeze should remain apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo and not a partisan political mouthpiece for endorsing candidates.

“Igbo people belong to different political parties; we can’t shut doors against ourselves. We won’t allow that.”

He also said his grouse with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo was disrespect for the late pioneer president of the country, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and not the group’s endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abukakar, and his running mate, Mr Peter Obi.

Speaking through his Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C-Don Adinuba, at a press conference in Awka, the state capital, Obiano described as sacrilegious for the Igbo socio-cultural organisation to have scheduled and held a private meeting the day the President of the country, Muhammadu Buhari, had set aside to honour the late Azikiwe by opening his mausoleum in Onitsha, Anambra State.

He said, “We’ve no issue with Peter Obi or Atiku or their endorsement. We are being misrepresented in the media since this issue began. We’ve not in any press statement mentioned Atiku or Obi’s name.

“Our grouse was how the Ohanaeze and Nnia Nwodo disrespected Zik, the day the whole nation was honouring him.”
