A massive riot has erupted in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria following the ban on okadas and tricycles from plying certain routes in the metropolis by the Lagos State Government.
The protest has led to a clash between the police and okada riders in Ijora area of the state as the police tried to stop the protesters.
The protesters, in their large number blocked the expressway and burnt tyres on the road. The police, in a bid to stop the protest led to the riot.
It was gathered that the police had shot canisters of teargas to disperse the large number of protesters at Ijora Olopa.

Twitter user, Ademide tweeted: “Dear Lagosians kindly steer clear of Ijora Olopa area. A shootout presently occurring there and there’s damage to properties going on. Police are said to be exchanging bullets with Okada and Keke riders. Don’t fall victim. Find alternate routes.”

Potential for protest after Motorcycle Ban in Lagos.
WHERE: Lagos State
WHEN: 01 February 2020
WHAT: The Lagos State Security Council, have made a decision to ban motocycles in several LGAs in Lagos state. The ban will cover the operation of Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) which affects the local council development areas (LCDAs) under the LG. They are Apapa LG- Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LG – Yaba LCDA, Surulere LG- Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs, Ikeja LG- Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs, Eti-Osa LG- Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs, Lagos Island LG- Lagos Island East LCDA. The ban will take effect from the 1st of February 2020.
ASSESSMENT (Risk level – MEDIUM):
There is likely to be protests by motorcycle operators in the state especially commercial motorcycle operators “Okada”.
ADVICE : Personnel in Lagos state are advised to
•Limit movement in the aforementioned locations in Lagos on February 1 2020.
•Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.
•Staff should maintain situational awareness.
•Report any security information to security team.
Conclusively, sequel to all the above, there is tendency for crime rate to increase because most of the operators of the bike that have no other means of livelihood may take to crime and absolute care must be taken in hiring domestic staff (driver and gatemen inclusive ).
