THE Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, on Sunday renewed the call for the creation of Ibadan State.
The monarch made the call at the annual luncheon and awards of the Ibadan Foundation, where the Chairman, Ibadan Elder’s Forum, Ambassador Olusola Sanu; Chairman, Kakanfo Inn Hotel and Conference Centre, Dr Lekan Are, and Chief Theophilus Akinyele were conferred with meritorious service awards.
Akinyele, who responded on behalf of the awardees, expressed appreciation for the honour bestowed on them. He described Olubadan’s reign as a blessing to the city, just as he alluded to the creation of Ibadan State on behalf of the monarch.
The ceremony was attended by the Olubadan himself; some high chiefs; past pioneer/founding president of the society, Chief Kola Daisi; other former presidents, Chief Bayo Alugbin (immediate past president); Chief Lere Adigun and the current President, Chief Onaola Ajibola, among others.
Chief Akinyele said, “I wish to speak on behalf of the Kabiyesi that Ibadan State is long overdue. Kabiyesi, God who enthroned you will grant you long life in the service of your people, our people.
“Ibadan has become more prosperous during your reign and it will be our greatest joy to have Ibadan State created. I am grateful for considering us worthy leaders of Ibadan Foundation.”
Daisi, who presented a meritorious service award to Are, commended him for his great achievements while serving as the foundation’s president.
Daisi described Are as a great grandson of famed Aare Latosa of Ibadan with outstanding attainments in life.
Other dignitaries at the event held in Kakanfo Inn were Chief Lateef Oyelade; Prof. Kunle Akinyemi; Prof. Kunle Adeniran; Chief Bayo Oyero; Chief Wole Akinwande; Chief Funke Ayegbayo; Prof. J. Lawani; Dr Kola Adegbola; and Funje Jimoh; Chief & Chief Mrs Wole Akinwande; Prof. Oluremi Alabi; Chief Y. A. Akande and Tokunbo Abiose.
