Ex Vigilante commander goes berserk in Abia, kills one


A wave of shock and grief has hit the Amakama community in Umuahia South, Abia State, following a brutal attack by a local security operative on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
The suspect, identified as Chinedu Anamelechi, reportedly unleashed a violent assault that left one person dead and two others fighting for their lives.
He allegedly shot and killed Ezinne Ariwodo, who was confirmed dead at the scene in a pool of blood.
He then brutally stabbed his girlfriend, who is the sister of the deceased.
The Second Shooting: A young man from the community was also shot during the rampage while reportedly trying to intervene.
The Abia State Police Command, through spokesperson ASP Maureen Chinaka, has confirmed the details of the attack.
Police operatives swiftly raced to the scene and rescued the two surviving victims, rushing them to a nearby hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.
Forensic teams have recovered exhibits from the scene, and the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for an autopsy.
The suspect, described as a former vigilante commander, fled the community immediately after the crime. A massive manhunt is currently underway to apprehend him.
While normalcy has reportedly been restored to the Amakama area, the motive for this gruesome violence remains unexplained. The police have warned residents against taking the law into their own hands while they work to track down the suspect.
