The Hausawa Tsantsa Movement, representing the indigenous Hausa people, issues this formal declaration to address the growing identity crisis fueled by the Fulani tribe’s continued appropriation of the Hausa language, which has led to a damaging misrepresentation of our cultural integrity. Recent viral incidents involving indecent behavior on social media by individuals identified as Fulani—yet communicating exclusively in Hausa—have unjustly tarnished the reputation of the Hausa people, leading the public to believe these actions are reflective of Hausa nature when they are, in fact, characteristic of a distinct ethnic group. We officially call upon His Eminence, Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to direct their kinsmen globally to cease the use of Hausa and return to their ancestral tongue, Fulfulde, to ensure that the world can clearly distinguish between the peaceful, business-oriented Hausa society and those whose actions and radical ideologies do not align with our values. Furthermore, as a manifestation of our resolve, many Hausawa have ceased attending prayers led by Fulani ulama to distance ourselves from radicalism; we categorically refuse to allow our “peaceful and good people’s language” to serve as a linguistic veil for a group whose conduct we do not condone, and we demand an immediate linguistic separation to restore the true identity of the Hausawa.
