David Umahi was expressing political support for Bola Tinubu and trying to convince South-East voters that the current administration is bringing more federal attention to the region through roads and infrastructure projects.

Your criticism reflects a wider debate in the South-East: many people argue that while road construction is important, the region also wants major strategic infrastructure such as:

Functional deep seaport,
Expanded rail connections,
Industrial hubs,
and stronger federal investment in trade logistics.
Supporters of the government point to projects.

Critics respond that:
the South-East still lacks a major operational seaport comparable to facilities in Lagos or parts of the South-South,
businesses in the region continue relying heavily on ports outside the region,
and promises around ports like Oguta or other proposals have moved slowly for years under multiple administrations, not only Tinubu’s.

Politically, Umahi’s statement that “no South-East president can do what Tinubu is doing” is more opinion and campaign messaging than a measurable fact.

Different people in the region will judge Tinubu’s performance differently depending on what they consider the region’s biggest unmet need, which is a functional sea Port.

On the seaport issue specifically, many South-East groups have long argued that a functioning regional port could:
reduce pressure on Lagos ports,
lower transport costs for traders,
improve exports,
and accelerate industrial growth in the South-East.

Tinubu expansion of Lagos Port is a clear indication that Tinubu hasn’t done anything tangible for the South East Geo political zone and we need an Igbo President that will address the old Eastern Nigeria Economic Coridor.

Ben Nnadi.
