Kannywood actor Muhammadu Usman has refused to backtrack after facing northern backlash for declaring that any Muslim who didn’t vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is “not a true Muslim.” In a new video, he insisted: “This statement stands as it is; there is no backtracking or retreating from it.”

The controversy began weeks ago when Usman said, “Any Muslim from the North or South… who doesn’t vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, I swear by Allah, I don’t believe he is a true Muslim.” He linked the claim to a prayer campaign where he sponsored 1,101 complete recitations of the Quran for APC’s electoral victory.
Facing death threats since the video went viral, Usman addressed his critics directly: “To those of you threatening to kill me… whether you kill me or not, I will eventually die. I will die! It is nothing new; I am built for this.” He revealed he has already completed 111 recitations and vowed to reach 1,101, praying “day and night” for Tinubu, Shettima, and APC governors across Northern Nigeria.
The actor also ruled out any support for the opposition. “By Allah, I will never agree to campaign for a PDP candidate. I will never agree, by Allah,” he said, listing APC leaders from Kano’s Abba Kabir Yusuf to Zamfara’s Dauda Lawal Dare and Sokoto’s Ahmad Aliyu as his chosen candidates. “We will continue to promote the APC administration from top to bottom, with no retreating.”
Usman maintained that his prayer sessions cover the whole country: “We will pray for our country Nigeria, for Northern Nigeria, for Southern Nigeria, for Eastern Nigeria, and for Western Nigeria.” He said the goal is for Allah to “grant them victory before 12:00 PM on election day” and ensure APC wins “without bloodshed or loss of lives.”
The actor’s defiant stance has reignited debate over religion and politics, with critics calling his comments “dangerous religious blackmail” while Usman closed with: “Even if Allah takes my life right now, I will be happy because I have a justification to present before Allah.”
