The Anambra State Government has introduced a new market regulation requiring traders operating in markets of economic interest to officially notify authorities before shutting down their businesses on any market day.

According to Section 6 of the Anambra State Market Law (2026), as read by the State Attorney General, Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, any trader intending not to open his or her shop on a market day must first inform the appropriate market leadership and provide reasons for the closure before the day in question.

The development has sparked reactions among residents and traders, with some critics arguing that the directive now places traders under strict government supervision similar to civil servants.

The law further states that any trader who fails to comply with the directive will face sanctions.
