To tackle religious extremists, President Traoré arrests Popular Islamic Scholar in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Mohamed Ishaq Kindo was arrested by Burkina Faso’s military authorities, after publicly criticizing a proposed law meant to regulate religious freedoms in the country.

He is an influential religious figure and the head of the Council of Sunni Ulama (Islamic scholars) in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Kindo openly spoke out against a new legislative draft introduced by the ruling military junta aimed at restricting or controlling religious organizations.

Security forces heavily cracked down on the demonstrations. Nearly 100 of Dr. Kindo’s supporters have been detained by security forces and reportedly moved to a camp for what the government calls “civic and citizenship training”.
