PREAMBLE
Following extensive consultations, prayerful reflections, and careful consideration of the prevailing political, economic, security, and social realities in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 General Elections, the Christian Elders and Professionals Consultative Council of Nigeria (CEPCCN) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Christian unity, constitutional democracy, justice, peaceful coexistence, responsible leadership, and sustainable national development.
The Council recognises that political differences are natural within every democratic society. However, such differences must never undermine national unity, threaten peaceful coexistence, or weaken the foundations of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We therefore urge all Nigerians to embrace dialogue, tolerance, mutual respect, and constructive engagement throughout the electoral process and beyond.
RESOLUTIONS
- Commitment to National Unity
CEPCCN reaffirms that the unity, peace, sovereignty, and stability of Nigeria remain paramount. Political competition must never be allowed to degenerate into ethnic, religious, or regional hostility.
- Respect for the Constitution and the Rule of Law
The Council calls upon all political actors, institutions, and citizens to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, respect the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic rights of every Nigerian.
- Credible, Free, and Peaceful Elections
We urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections that are transparent, credible, free, fair, inclusive, and reflective of the genuine will of the Nigerian people.
- Responsible Political Leadership
Political parties and candidates should conduct issue-based campaigns founded upon integrity, competence, accountability, and national development, while rejecting hate speech, vote-buying, electoral violence, misinformation, and every form of political intimidation.
- Security and Protection of Citizens
The Council calls upon all security agencies to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with professionalism, neutrality, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of every Nigerian before, during, and after the elections.
- National Inclusion and Responsible Governance
CEPCCN reiterates that good governance is strengthened when every segment of society feels represented, respected, and treated with fairness. National unity is best preserved through justice, equity, inclusiveness, equal opportunities, and appointments that reflect both competence and the constitutional principles guiding Nigeria’s diversity.
- Role of Religious and Traditional Leaders
Religious and traditional leaders should continue to serve as ambassadors of peace, reconciliation, moral guidance, and national healing by discouraging violence, inflammatory rhetoric, and all forms of extremism.
- Civic Responsibility of Citizens
Every Nigerian should participate peacefully in the electoral process, reject violence, refuse to spread false information, respect differing political opinions, and contribute to strengthening democratic governance.
OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATIONS
To the Federal Government
Strengthen national security, protect lives and property, guarantee the independence of democratic institutions, promote justice and inclusion, and provide an enabling environment for peaceful elections.
To INEC
Maintain institutional independence, ensure transparency in voter registration, logistics, technology deployment, result management, and timely communication in order to sustain public confidence.
To Political Parties and Candidates
Conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns; respect electoral laws; avoid divisive rhetoric; and accept lawful electoral outcomes while utilising constitutional mechanisms for dispute resolution.
To Security Agencies
Remain impartial, professional, and accountable while protecting voters, electoral officials, observers, journalists, and election materials throughout the electoral process.
To Religious Leaders
Continue praying for Nigeria, preach peace and righteousness, encourage responsible civic participation, and avoid statements capable of inflaming religious or political tensions.
To Traditional Institutions
Promote community dialogue, discourage violence, and support peaceful coexistence among all citizens irrespective of political affiliation.
To Civil Society and the Media
Promote voter education, fact-check information, encourage civic responsibility, and provide balanced, objective, and responsible coverage throughout the electoral period.
To Nigerian Citizens
Exercise your constitutional right to vote peacefully, reject inducement and violence, respect the rights of others, and remain committed to preserving the unity and future of our nation.
CONCLUSION
The Christian Elders and Professionals Consultative Council of Nigeria firmly believes that Nigeria’s democratic future depends not merely on the conduct of elections but on our collective commitment to justice, constitutional governance, responsible leadership, national unity, and the fear of God.
As Scripture declares:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
We therefore call upon all Nigerians to reject hatred, embrace dialogue, uphold justice, protect democratic institutions, and work together to build a peaceful, united, secure, and prosperous Federal Republic of Nigeria before, during, and after the 2027 General Elections.
