A Letter from Stockholm

By Kio Amachree

There is a ledger that no EFCC can audit, no tribunal can seal, and no propaganda machine can rewrite. It is the ledger of every African leader who turned away from God, from reason, and from his people, and instead placed his throne in the hands of marabouts, native doctors, féticheurs and midnight altars. Scholars have documented that virtually all African strongmen of a certain era came to power emboldened by beliefs in local magical spells, and that personal dictatorship, when all else fails, resorts to the world of spirits — the universe of soothsayers, diviners and sorcerers, the world of marabouts. Read the record. Every single one of them ended in ruin, exile, disgrace or a shallow grave. The altar always presents its bill. Satan always collects.

Francisco Macías Nguema of Equatorial Guinea. He believed strongly in magic, styled himself the Unique Miracle, and surrounded himself with fetish power while he slaughtered his own citizens — an estimated 35,000 to 50,000 people died during his rule, and by 1979 a quarter of the population lived in exile. The juju did not save him. In the summer of 1979 he ordered members of his own family killed, was overthrown by his own nephew, sentenced to death for genocide, and executed by firing squad on 29 September 1979. The charms were silent as the rifles spoke.

Sani Abacha of Nigeria. Our own national shame. Juju-marabout mediums had a grip on General Abacha, flown in to fortify a stolen throne, while he solicited prayers for his self-succession disguised as national prayers for divine intervention. He looted billions, hanged Ken Saro-Wiwa, and believed himself untouchable behind his spiritual wall. He died suddenly in the presidential palace in 1998 under circumstances that remain unclear, and his death was met with wide celebration. Not one amulet followed him into the grave. His name is now a global synonym for theft.

Idi Amin Dada of Uganda. The self-declared Conqueror of the British Empire, steeped in the occult mystique of power, accused like Mobutu and Mugabe of using supernatural power to gain and retain political rule. Half a million dead. And the end? Ousted in 1979 after a disastrous war with Tanzania, he rotted in exile in Saudi Arabia for the rest of his life, a fat ghost in a foreign land, forbidden even to be buried among his people as a hero.

Jean-Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Republic. The self-crowned Emperor whose rituals descended into the unspeakable — reported to have consumed human flesh as part of his rituals, who personally oversaw the killing of schoolchildren and bankrupted his country on a diamond-studded coronation. The spirits he fed did not defend him. Overthrown, condemned to death, caged like an animal in his own former palace, he died a broken, ranting relic.

Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire. The Leopard, who like Houphouët-Boigny, Bongo, Eyadéma and Kérékou could not resist recourse to occult belief systems and his féticheurs, who renamed a nation after his own myth. Thirty-two years of sorcery-soaked kleptocracy. The end? Chased out of Kinshasa like a thief in the night, dying of cancer in Moroccan exile, his billions scattered, his Zaire erased from the map itself. The very name of his kingdom no longer exists. That is how thoroughly heaven audited him.

Samuel Doe of Liberia. A man in the grip of native spiritual mediums and negative ritual practices, who believed bulletproof charms would preserve him. In 1990 he was captured, tortured on camera, mutilated and killed. The whole world watched his juju fail in real time. There has never been a more public demonstration that the shrine cannot stop the appointed hour.

Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo. The voodoo-fortified eternal president, whose regime leaned on occult legitimacy through rigged election after rigged election. He clung to the seat for thirty-eight years and still could not negotiate with death — cardiac arrest took him in 2005, and his legacy is a family franchise built on a stolen state, cursed by history rather than crowned by it.

Now, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this letter is addressed to you.

I make no claim about what happens in your private chambers at midnight. I do not need to. I simply lay the ledger before you. Every predecessor of yours on this continent who chose the shrine over the state, the marabout over the mandate, the fetish over the fear of God, ended the same way: disgraced, exiled, executed, or dead on the throne with his secrets spilling out behind him. Power obtained or preserved through darkness is a loan, and the lender is not merciful. The interest rate is your legacy, your family name, and your eternal account.

Nigeria does not need rituals. Nigeria needs electricity, roads, honest courts, a professional military and leaders who answer to the living, not the dead. If any man around you whispers that spiritual fortification can substitute for good governance, understand that Abacha heard the same whisper in Aso Rock, and Aso Rock became his tomb. The villa has seen this film before. It always ends the same way.

To every sitting African leader consulting the darkness tonight: the record is unanimous. There is not one exception. Not one. You cannot bribe eternity. You cannot deceive heaven with an appropriation bill. The secrets are always exposed, the accounts are always opened, and the collector always comes.

Satan always collects. Ask Macías. Ask Abacha. Ask Doe. They would tell you, if the darkness they served had left anything of them behind.
