Going by credible reports filtering in, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has shelved the purported accelerated promotion of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Colonel Nurudeen Yusuf; a decision for which the President deserves unreserved commendation as a true democrat and statesman who listens attentively to wise counsel. This reported decision, taken with commendable speed following our appeals and interventions by two highly respected elder statesmen and former Service Chiefs, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians, reflects responsive leadership, political maturity and a deep respect for military professionalism and institutional order.

Similarly, these distinguished service chiefs demonstrated rare courage, discipline and a profound sense of responsibility by lending their voices in defence of established norms and regimentation. Their intervention showed exemplary leadership and genuine concern for the credibility and integrity of national institutions, common among serving and retired military personnel. I deeply appreciate their support and patriotism in standing for what is right.

By choosing restraint over expediency, Mr President has indeed demonstrated that leadership is not merely the exercise of power, but the application of sound judgment in the overall national interest. While our concerns and their intervention were instrumental, President Tinubu equally deserves commendation for being responsive, receptive and willing to listen to words of wisdom offered in good faith.

The reported proposed promotion had understandably generated concern within informed security and policy circles, as it raised fundamental issues of fairness, due process and long-established promotion norms within the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria. By stepping back and allowing established systems to prevail, the President has reinforced confidence in his administration’s commitment to merit, discipline and equity within the Armed Forces of this country.

This decision has undoubtedly sent a clear and reassuring message to officers and men of the Nigerian military that diligence, patience, professional development and adherence to clearly defined career pathways remain the only legitimate routes to career progression and advancement. It strengthens morale, preserves cohesion and safeguards the credibility of the officer concerned and a critical national institution at a time when Nigeria can ill afford avoidable distractions.

Special recognition must also go to all concerned stakeholders, particularly those who commented, shared and liked my post and all those who saw reason with us and courageously lent their voices in support of this principled position. Your phone calls, whatsApp, telegarms and SMS are well appreciated. Your actions were motivated not by personal interest, but by a shared commitment to fairness, institutional integrity and the long-term health of the Armed Forces, and I sincerely appreciate you all. This is patriotism in its truest form. God bless you.

Equally commendable is the conduct of the senior officer at the centre of it all, Colonel Nurudeen Yusuf himself. His calm disposition and continued professional discharge of duties amid public debate reflect the discipline, loyalty and honour expected of a fine officer and a gentleman. Such restraint protects institutional integrity and safeguards his long-term professional standing and integrity.

As Nigeria continues to confront complex security and governance challenges, it is imperative that presidential aides and advisers consistently offer counsel that is honest, dispassionate and firmly grounded in established rules, institutional order and the best interests of the nation. Advice driven by political expediency or narrow personal considerations does a grave disservice to both the President and the country.

Finally, I would like to reiterate that I will not relent in speaking truth to power or in pointing out observed misnomers whenever they arise, always in the overall interest of the nation, the military and all those concerned. If this reported decision stands, it will remain a notable example of leadership that listens, reflects, and acts wisely, further reinforcing President Tinubu’s standing as a leader committed to fairness, professionalism, and the enduring strength of Nigeria’s national institutions. I salute him for that.
