WE CONDEMN SHARIA PANEL ACTIVITIES IN YORUBA LAND

We, the Oduduwa Yoruba Nation Youth, both at home and in the diaspora, strongly condemn the ongoing activities and expansion of Sharia arbitration panels across the Southwest.

While it is noted that no state government in the region has officially established Sharia courts, the increasing operations, meetings, and advocacy for such systems raise serious concerns about cultural integrity, legal structure, and regional autonomy.

Yoruba land is built on diversity, tolerance, and traditional values. Any attempt—direct or indirect—to introduce or normalize external legal frameworks that conflict with our heritage is unacceptable.

We emphasize:

  • Yoruba land must remain a place of religious freedom and coexistence
  • No legal system should be imposed outside constitutional and cultural consensus
  • Any expansion toward formal Sharia courts in the Southwest will be firmly resisted through lawful and peaceful means

We call on all relevant stakeholders, traditional institutions, and government authorities to take urgent notice and act in the interest of unity and stability in the region.

There are no formal “Sharia courts” established by state governments in the Southwest yet, but Sharia arbitration panels have been operating and holding meetings. Based on recent reports, here are the key Islamic clerics and scholars publicly linked to these panels/meetings:

  1. Clerics/Scholars Named in Panels

Imam Abdullahi Abdul-Mutolib – Kadi on the independent Sharia Arbitration Panel launched in Ekiti State, Oct 2024

Imam Abdulraheem Junaid-Bamigbola – Kadi on the Ekiti Sharia Arbitration Panel

Dr Ibrahim Aminullahi-Ogunrinde – Kadi on the Ekiti Sharia Arbitration Panel

Mr. Trimizee Adisa Dairo – Legal practitioner and Sharia judge (Qadi) at the Sharia Panel in Lagos State 8a09a63c

  1. Prominent Clerics Commenting/Leading Advocacy

Prof Kamaldeen Balogun – Emeritus Professor of Islamic Studies & Chief Imam of Egba Gbagura, Abeokuta. Clarified that Southwest has panels, not courts

Sheik Abdulrahman Ahmad – National Missioner & Chief Imam, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria. Confirmed Lagos has had a Sharia panel for ∼20 years

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede – Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Called for Sharia panels across all 6 Southwest states

Sheik Dawood Malaasan – Mufti of Iwo, Osun State. Publicly defended Sharia court in Oyo and said “Be expecting Sharia Council in Osun too”

Qaasim Odedeji – Legal practitioner and Sharia advocate from Ede, Osun State. Writing for establishment of Sharia Courts of Appeal in Southwest.

  1. Organizations Coordinating

Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria – Spearheading demand for Sharia courts in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos

Concerned Yoruba Muslim Scholars in Nigeria – Also pushing for Sharia courts

Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) – Sultan of Sokoto & Prof. Oloyede backing panels
